The Goo Goo Dolls are hoping to give their current U.S. tour an extra boost
with the help of viral Internet marketing. The alt-rockers from Buffalo, New York, are leaning on such social networking sites as YouTube and UStream to spread the word about the tour and hopefully bring out more fans.
The idea came from a show the band did over the holidays. The performances were ultimately put online, where people were able to see the band’s new songs. The videos eventually spread and helped the band drum up excitement for upcoming shows.
“It was so weird. We played this show for NBC where we had ice skaters come out,” bassist Robby Takac told Livedaily.com. “We played in this hockey rink. We played all these singles and new songs and ice skaters came out and skated. It was on Christmas Day, so a lot of people saw it . . . a lot of people recorded it and put it up on YouTube.”
He added, “We did a gig on New Year’s Eve in Detroit and we walked out and started to play the song and the entire crowd was singing along. I thought, ‘Holy cow, we haven’t released this yet. We played it live on TV once.’ I got to see how powerful that was firsthand.”
The band is now using UStream to give fans a behind the scenes look of their work in the studio and on the road.
